Teacher
of mathematics commonly have difficulties when they teach student because the
teacher must suit the teaching learning method with mental development of the
student.
Changing
of the world must be followed by development of curriculum that must answer the
challenge of recently issues in the world. Mathematics education based
competence emphasis in ability of the graduated, so that curriculum developed
based on extension of standard competence become base ability. Standard
competence is ability that can do or view in mathematics, besides base ability
is minimum ability that must be had by each student when they are learning
certain topics.
Teach
math is not easy, because there are different between pure math and math in
school. Ebbutt and Straker in Marsigit define math in school as: 1. Mathematics
is an activity to discover the pattern and the relation (the teacher have to give
a chance for the student to research about that pattern and relation of
mathematics), 2. Mathematics as creativity that need imagination, intuition and
research (the teacher have to give a chance for the student to think creatively
and full of imagination), 3. Mathematics as problem solving (the teacher have
to make the environment of learning that stimulates arise of the mathematics
problem and also stimulate the student thinking about how to solve it, 4.
Mathematics as communication tool (the teacher have to support the student to
know about the characteristics of mathematics.
To improve
student competence optimally, we have know about the characteristics of
student. If we neglect the characteristic of student, the teaching learning
process will useless because the student can’t get anything. They are the
characteristic of student: 1. Student will learn mathematics if they have
motivation, 2. Student learn mathematics by their selves, 3. Student will learn
mathematics dependently or cooperatively, 4. Student need context and different
situation I learning math.
To
improve teaching learning process in competence-based curriculum, the first step
that have to do by the teacher is make a good syllable so it can be good guide
in the teaching learning process. Standard competence expands into 3 until 6
based competence with use operational verb. For every grade, mathematics
material is about facts, concepts, understanding ability, algorithmic ability,
problem solving and investigation. The material of mathematics education is
material that learned by the student as a tool to get based competence and the
aim of learning process. In syllable there exist the time that needed to finish
certain material. The time that needed depends on the difficulties of the
material and the depth of the material.
To make a good syllable, the teacher has to
give high attention in every rule, characteristics (whether characteristics of
math/topic or characteristics of the student) and what is emphasized more.
